Welcome to Solent Concert Band

After a disappointing result at Torquay in March, we have been working hard to prepare for a busy season of engagements over the summer.

We were once again proud to be a part of St Mary's annual May Day fete in Portsmouth this year. The weather was excellent and the band thoroughly enjoyed entertaining a packed crowd.

Concert

Following our pre-contest concert at St Saviour's church in Stamshaw, we are pleased to have been invited back for another summer concert on 19 June 2009. We'll be posting ticket information here as soon as it becomes available. If you require any further information in the meantime please contact our secretary.

Solent Concert Band is based on the south coast of England in Portsmouth, Hampshire. The band (originally known as Southsea Junior Band) was founded in 1969 by Wesley Garner, Noel Horner and Ron Moore, with the aim of recruiting young musicians, eager to learn the 'Art' of brass banding. Over the years the band grew in size and standard, and by 1974, had become fully established under the new name of Solent Youth Concert Band.

As the band grew in numbers, it became necessary to form a second band, which became the Solent Concert Band. Both bands continue to thrive, competing and entertaining throughout the year.

Solent Concert Band is a registered 2nd section band, regularly competing in the West of England Regional Brass Band Championships.

The philosophy of the band is, and always has been, to offer free instrumental tuition and instrument loan to musicians of all ages and abilities.

Join One of the Bands

Due to the normal ebb and flow of players in the world of brass bands, we are currently looking to recruit new players, particularly cornets. If you are looking for a new band to play with, or simply want a blow please contact us.

Membership of Solent Concert band is open to all brass and percussion musicians of all standards. We have two bands:

Training Band

Solent Concert Youth Band is always looking for new and enthusiastic youngsters who would like to join the band and welcome players aged between 6 and 19 years of age. If you are interested in coming along, then please email admin@solentconcertband.com or view our Contacts page. The Junior Band rehearses on Monday evenings from 6:30. We have also begun to offer quartet and individual lessons and coaching on Mondays.

Recently the band has taken several older players under its wing who are eager to learn a brass instrument. If you want to learn to play, no matter what your age or ability we would love you to get in touch.

Senior Band

Solent Concert Band is for older and more accomplished players. We perform numerous engagements during the year including fetes, Cruise Liner departures and formal concerts. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, and Sunday mornings from 11:00am to 1:00pm.
