Solent Concert Band at St
Mary's
|
Solent
Concert Band was proud to have played at St Mary's annual
May Day Fete on 5th May 2008.
The Band opened with a rousing piece called
'Theme From Jag' arranged by Kernen.
This was followed by our first solo performance,
'Hailstorm' by William Rimmer. This featured the immense
talents of Daniel Brown on principle cornet. This is a
fantastic piece for both players and audience alike. The
piece is based on a Polka rhythm and contrasts furious
triple tonguing form the soloist to the light accompaniment
to the energetic and rousing finale.
We followed up with a traditional Brass
Band Concert March entitled 'The Cossack' by William Rimmer.
|
| Next
was a wonderful arrangement called 'Mancini Magic', a
superb arrangement of some of Henry Mancini's best loved
music, arranged by Allan Street. This excellent selection
contains, amongst others, themes from Peter Gunn, Moon
River, The Elephant Walk and Charade.
'Portuguese Party' was next. This is a lively
samba number, again featuring some teeth-splitting tonguing
from the cornets and horns.
Amelia Young featured next with a wonderfully
lyrical and moving solo rendition of Ivor Bosanko's 'Share
My Yolk'. This was originally a Salvation Army spiritual
number, but works just as well as a quiet contrast to
the previous numbers. The Piece also featured Colin Garner
on solo euphonium.
We followed this by an arrangement of the
Andy Williams hit 'Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You'.

Horn Solo
| Next was 'Hey
Jude' arranged for Brass Band by Derek Broadbent. This
featured a horn trio from Natasha Marchant, Emilly Simmons
and Janet Kitson. This is a great number for the audience
to sing along to.
'Irvin Berlin for Brass' arranged by Stephen
Duro followed. This is another great selection from one
of the twentieth century's greatest composers. The piece
includes exerts from Let's Face the Music and Dance, There's
No Business Like Show Business and other classics.
The band finished with F Bernaet's arrangement
of the Whitney Houston hit single 'One Moment In Time'.
This is a great blow and a really good tune to finish
off with

All
in all the band played really well and had a wonderful
afternoon, if a little hot for May!
We would like the thank the staff of St
Mary's church for inviting us to play and we hope we will
return there next year with an even bigger and brighter
program.
We would also like to thank and congratulate
Emilly for holding down 1st Horn as she normally plays
in the Training Band. She'll surely make a great horn
player! |
