Wesley started
his musical career in Salvation Army Bands and benefited
from some valuable training with Ivor Bosanko. He has
used his knowledge gained in the early days to help train
many young players over a period of 37 years. He has always
offered lessons free of charge and is keen to encourage
young players. As a result, Wesley has always had a thriving
Youth and Senior Band.
Wesley has been conducting the Solent Concert
Band for 37 years, during which time he has led the band
to many memorable contest successes, which include, competing
twice in the National Finals in the Royal Albert Hall,
in 1980 and 1981, where the band achieved excellent placings
of 7th and 8th. Encouraged and influenced by Stanley Boddington,
his achievements in the south of England with brass bands
are well known all over the country.
As well as being the
Musical Director at Solent Concert Band, Wesley has also
conducted Woodfalls Band on many occasions, leading them
to victory at the Grand Shield, in 1985. The following
year he led Solent Concert Band to 2nd place in the Grand
Shield and thus qualified for the British Open again.
Wes has always been committed to educating
young players. During his lengthy career he has helped
many young players, many of whom have gone on to pursue
music in their adult careers. Sixteen of Wes's former
pupils have gone on to play with the National Youth Orchestra
of Great Britain.
